I Am Failing To Understand the Sickness of Our Age

This morning I was laying in bed with a coffee, searching the newest posts and news in the Catholic world, and came across an article written in reaction to "abornaments", little Christmas tree ornaments featuring fetuses on crosses and all manner of other sick displays.

I have never been so struck in my conscience on the subject of abortion as when I saw this.  I refuse to even link to the article - it is so sickening, so horrifically callous that I had to fight back a strong urge to jump out of bed and vomit.  I am not kidding.

Wherever one stands on the issue, be they Christian or not, there is no need for this kind of thing.  It is insulting to women, it is insulting to the dignity of human life, and honestly, it is making me very concerned about the future.  It is heinous.

After I heard about the nightmarish shooting in Connecticut, I found the video above.  I posted it on Facebook for all to see and comment on and ponder - not one "like", not one comment - maybe there can be no comments on these words.

But I don't understand.  I am failing to understand the wretchedness of the modern world.  I do not understand why a young man would want to go in to a school and shoot innocent children.  I don't understand why a man in China went and stabbed over 20 children for no reason.  And to top that off with making Christmas ornaments depicting crucified fetuses, I am almost speechless.  I seriously cannot understand what's going on, why people think this kind of thing is humorous.  Perhaps everything truly has become a joke to modern society.

Forgive me for the dark post - but when I saw the "abornaments", this just all came tumbling out.  What can we do?  What are we called to do?

The time, I think, is coming, where we can no longer hide our heads in the sand.  I am speaking more to myself here, as one individual Catholic Christian.  We have to be lights of love, we have to proclaim the light of Christ in our actions, in our words, even in total silence.  We have to.

Tell me, readers, what should we do?  I am nauseated.

  1. I really believe in the power of prayers especially the rosary. If you look at every apparition from Fatima, Lourdes, to Kibeho, it's clear that the Mother of God is giving us the response and answer to the problem of our modern time

  2. I understand how you feel, I really do. This is something I wrote from my blog that I think might be helpful:

What do we do when the darkness comes? We light a candle. We start a fire. We march forwards, knowing that the darkness is coming to us, and we become ready to face it with swords drawn and our hearts strengthened by the Hope of Jesus Christ, the one who has defeated death. We do not allow it to take hold of us, but we stand up and fight it. I cannot sugar-coat this; this isn’t going to mean that people won’t suffer and die. But we are told by Jesus to not be afraid (Luke 5:10). Our Lord also says this: “I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

  3. Only a deep interior life can keep the darkness of what is going on out of our own hearts so without that life of prayer and of frequent reception of the sacraments we can easily fall. One of the saints said that those who pray will be saved and those who don't won't; it's that simple. God has been expunged from the public sphere as well as from the hearts of millions and that lack of God is letting the devil in. People don't pray anymore.

I suggest you turn away from the news if it bothers you too much. We can't turn away and deny that all this evil is around us but we can choose how much of it we want to let in. So much on the news is just disgusting and evil and truth be told there is very little we can do to change things.

Keep saying the Jesus Prayer, the Rosary, etc. as well as to attend Mass, go to Confession and in general pray to have interior peace, not just for yourself but for those around you. Pray for others a lot too. We cannot give what we don't have.

Try not to let anything at all destroy your interior peace.

  4. Justin is right, we must build up our interior prayer life and develop a stronger inner relationship with Christ. I say this to myself as well. There is so much darkness out there but the Lord is always with us and we have to keep our eyes on Him, otherwise we will like Peter sink under the waves of darkness. Just one snippet of old good news for you, one Catholic man in Vietnam who saved so many babies and brought light into so many lives...I saw this myself just recently and it really uplifted me so much...what a wonderful man. Video title 'One man to save rejected babies' RT News.
