St. Nazarius of Valaam on Holy Communion

"O, you of virtue, I beg you, consider attentively who is He whom you dare to receive into yourself?  It is God Himself three times holy.  With whom do you wish to form the most intimate union?  With Him who has created us...Holding your hands joined in the form of the cross and placed over your breast, incline a bit your head and recite the prayer: ' I believe, O Lord, and confess...' to the end.  Recite it with all your heart, with sighings, fear, trembling and compunction of heart.  Tremble as you stand erect and reflect on what you are doing in order not to eat the flesh of the Lord and not to drink His blood unto your condemnation.  Ask of God most merciful that even as this moment when He visits you by His grace you can show compunction, tenderness, and burning tears."

  1. This is a bit late but I actually found this quote on MonkRock that linked back to you. POWERFUL! I am printing this one out. Great meditation before Holy Communion.

So grateful for your blog...one of the few I faithfully visit as God allows (trying to keep a balance with that computer time!).
