Great and Intense Mercy

"Great and intense mercy grasps the heart and wrings it out, for he who is merciful is not able to bear or hear or see any harm or the slightest sorrow which takes place in the created world."

-St. Isaac the Syrian, qtd. in Maloney, Pilgrimage of the Heart, pg. 164

  1. The work of St Isaac the Syrian seems to be difficult to come by in book form. The main text, 'The Ascetical Homilies' is apparently out of print and extremely expensive. BUT, I did come across this in archive.org (God bless them :)

There's no table of contents or introduction in the scanned copy, but, the quote you posted is in there, and so are many other texts of St Isaac. I'm working on grepping all the chapter titles and will post them here for future reference once I get it finished.

There are a few other interesting text by Arent Wensinck, particularly:

Legends of Eastern saints; chiefly from Syriac sources (1911) (2 volumes)

    Enjoy :)

  2. Hello Jason,

I was wondering if you might tell me a little bit about Maloney's book. I've been thinking about buying a copy and any information you could give as to your impressions and it's format would be greatly appreciated.

Ps. Thanks for the tip about St. Isaac, Anon.

    1. Hi John! Sure - Fr. Maloney was a Jesuit priest who converted to the Orthodox Church. His life's work was notable for his studies of the Christian East, and in bringing the East into the mainstream of Western Christianity. Some call him a modernist. For myself, I don't much care for his personal opinions as such on things, but his work in bringing the East to the West is of great value for Catholics I think. As for the specific book in question, Pilgrimage of the Heart, it is unfortunately out of print I think. It is a great collection of the Eastern Fathers and saints quotes, both pre and post-schism. However, his other book entitled Prayer of the Heart is still available: http://monkrock.com/index.cfm?load=page&page=36&group=89&view=details&product=1425

      God bless,
      Jason

  3. Hello Jason,

Thank you for the information. For those who are interested, you can still find Pilgrimage of the Heart pretty easily from the second hand sellers.

What I was wondering is if there are extensive quotes or if it's one of those books where you just have a few short quotes per page. More like a devotional.

    Anyway, thanks again!

    Pax,
    John

    1. Hey John,
It's not so much a devotional, but a compilation of the Eastern fathers and Orthodox saints post-schism that is arranged by subject. It is truly an amazing treasury of info.

Hope you can come by a copy!
      Jason

  4. Hello Jason,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I just ordered a copy from Amazon for the very reasonable price of 1 penny, not counting shipping. So if anyone else is interested, you can pick up a copy for a song.

    Pax,
    John
